Backing: Artificial grass features two backings:
- Primary Backing (Base Fabric): A woven mesh made from high-quality PP material that secures the grass fibers during the tufting process.
- Secondary Backing (Coating): A latex or polyurethane layer that further secures the grass fibers and, together with the primary backing, determines the backing weight and dimensional stability.
For high-traffic areas like sports fields, public places, or playgrounds, a backing weight of at least 26 ounces (777 grams) is recommended.
Tip: Styrene-butadiene latex backings are not suitable for wet environments as they can weaken over time. Opt for a high-quality PU backing that resists stretching, promotes drainage, and extends the product’s lifespan.
Artificial Grass Infill
Infill: This material is placed between the turf fibers and serves several purposes:
- Keeps grass blades upright.
- Provides cushioning for foot traffic and pets.
- Stabilizes the turf and prevents shifting.
- Protects the backing from UV damage.
Common infill materials include silica sand, rubber particles, and organic mixes. High-quality infills like quartz sand and zeolite offer antibacterial, cooling, or odor-removing properties, making them ideal for pet areas or hot climates.
Sub Base
The subbase is the foundation beneath the artificial turf and is crucial for a quality installation. It prevents wrinkling, promotes drainage, and extends the turf’s lifespan. Typical subbase materials include compacted sand, decomposed granite, gravel, or crushed stone. For rooftops, outdoor playgrounds, and landscaping projects, select a subbase with excellent surface stability and drainage capabilities.
