What Determines the Lifespan of Non-Infill Artificial Turf?

1. UV and Weathering Resistance Is a Major Factor

Outdoor artificial turf is continuously exposed to:

  • Ultraviolet radiation
  • Heat
  • Rain
  • Humidity
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Pollution and environmental contaminants

Over time, insufficient weathering resistance can contribute to:

  • Color fading
  • Fiber embrittlement
  • Loss of tensile properties
  • Fiber breakage

However, UV resistance should not be judged simply by asking whether a product contains a particular additive.

The relevant questions are:

What polymer is used? What is the yarn construction? What weathering test was performed? How much of the relevant performance was retained after testing?

2. Mechanical Wear Can Be More Important Than Aging

A turf system in a private garden may receive relatively limited traffic.

A football field, training facility or community sports area may experience thousands of hours of foot traffic, turning movements and repeated mechanical loading.

This means two identical turf products can have very different real-world service lives when installed in different environments.

Typical signs of mechanical wear include:

  • Flattened fibers
  • Broken fibers
  • Loss of fiber density
  • Localized worn areas
  • Reduced surface resilience

For high-traffic applications, usage intensity can be just as important as UV resistance.
