Can Non-Infill Artificial Turf Wrinkle or Bubble Due to Thermal Expansion and Contraction?

Non-infill artificial turf is increasingly used for sports fields, residential gardens, terraces, balconies, playgrounds, and landscape applications because it does not require loose sand or rubber infill. However, one common question remains: Can non-infill artificial turf develop wrinkles, ripples, or bubbles when temperatures change?

The short answer is yes, thermal expansion and contraction can occur, because synthetic turf contains polymer-based materials that respond to temperature changes. However, noticeable wrinkling is not an inevitable characteristic of non-infill turf. Product construction, backing stability, installation conditions, substrate preparation, drainage, and temperature management all influence the final result.

For international projects, buyers should therefore evaluate dimensional stability and installation quality at the system level, rather than assuming that all non-infill turf behaves in the same way.

What Causes Wrinkles and Bubbles in Non-Infill Artificial Turf?

Thermal deformation usually results from the interaction of four factors:

  1. Polymer thermal expansion and contraction
  2. Backing dimensional stability
  3. Installation tension and seam construction
  4. Temperature, sunlight, moisture, and substrate conditions

Synthetic turf fibers and backing materials are polymer-based, so their dimensions can change as temperature changes.

When the turf expands but cannot release the resulting stress, compression may accumulate within the sheet. This can manifest as:

  • Small ripples
  • Localized wrinkles
  • Raised areas
  • Bubbles
  • Seam opening
  • Edge lifting

The same principle applies in reverse during cooling: excessive contraction can place additional stress on seams and adhesive joints.

Therefore, good non-infill turf design is not about eliminating thermal movement completely; it is about controlling and accommodating that movement.
