Does non-infill artificial turf need to be pre-laid before installation? In most professional installations, pre-laying—also called relaxation, conditioning, or unrolling—is a recommended preparation step. It allows the turf roll to relax after transportation and storage, helps the backing and synthetic fibers adapt to the installation environment, and can reduce the likelihood of wrinkles, ripples, and joint tension after installation.
However, pre-laying should not be treated as a substitute for proper sub-base preparation or professional installation. The recommended relaxation time and installation conditions can vary depending on turf construction, backing system, transportation conditions, ambient temperature, humidity, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
For premium non-infill artificial turf systems, the combination of material stability, pre-laying, correct tension management, accurate cutting, and professional seam installation is generally more important than any single installation parameter.
