Why Does Non-Infill Artificial Turf Need to Be Pre-Laid?

Non-infill artificial turf differs from conventional infill systems because it is designed to provide performance without relying on sand or rubber granules as loose ballast. This makes the dimensional stability of the turf system and the quality of installation particularly important.

Pre-laying mainly serves three purposes.

Pre-Laying Helps Release Transportation Stress

Artificial turf is normally manufactured and transported in rolls. During rolling, handling, loading, and transportation, the backing and synthetic fibers remain curved for an extended period.

When a turf roll is immediately cut and seamed after being unrolled, some residual curvature or internal stress may still be present.

After installation, this stress can gradually be released and may contribute to:

  • Minor ripples
  • Localized wrinkles
  • Edge lifting
  • Uneven seams
  • Surface undulations

Allowing the turf to relax before final cutting and bonding gives the material time to recover naturally.

This is particularly relevant for long turf rolls and projects where the material has experienced extended transportation or storage.
