Most artificial turf fibers and backing materials are polymer-based, commonly incorporating PE, PP, or related polymer systems.
Like other polymer products, artificial turf can experience dimensional changes as temperature changes.
For example, turf transported in a relatively cool environment may expand after being exposed to warmer installation conditions. If the material is immediately cut and permanently fixed before reaching a more stable condition, additional stress may develop around seams and perimeter areas.
Pre-laying allows installers to assess the turf after it has adjusted to the actual site conditions.
This makes the final cutting dimensions more representative of the turf’s installation state.
Pre-Laying Helps Synthetic Fibers Recover Their Appearance
Transportation can temporarily flatten or bend synthetic fibers.
After the turf is unrolled and left in a relaxed position, the fibers can gradually recover their intended orientation.
For non-infill systems using straight and curled fibers to create self-supporting performance, this recovery can be particularly useful.
The basic process is therefore:
Unroll → Relax → Inspect → Align → Cut → Seam → Secure
Rather than:
Unroll → Immediately Cut → Immediately Glue
